CEN ICT Skills Workshop
The European Committee for Standardization (CEN) is a business facilitator in Europe, removing trade barriers for European industry and consumers. Its mission is to foster the European economy in global trading, the welfare of European citizens and the environment. Through its services it provides a platform for the development of European standards and other technical specifications.
The CEN ICT Skills Workshop provides market players with a comprehensive and integrated range of standardization services and products, in order to contribute to the success of the Information Society in Europe. CEN/ISSS was created in mid-1997 as the focus for its ICT activities. ISSS (Information Society Standardization System), now known as ICT Workshops provide an open process combining the tried and tested backing of the formal standardization environment with a fast, market-driven approach. In this way CEN draws on the best of both worlds, bridging the gap between formal and informal standardization, combining the rapid process of informal specification with the security offered by the formal open consensus of traditional standardization.
Within CEN/ICT there are a number of different workshops. CEPIS is heavily involved in the CEN ICT Skills Workshop, which is of significant strategic importance. This workshop is currently finalising agreements on:
- The European e-Competence Framework in Action
- End-user e-Skills Framework Requirement Project
The CEN Workshop on ICT Skills and Curricula, proposed by Cedefop, CEPIS and the ICT industry, represented by the Career Space consortium, has validated in an open consensus process the ICT profiles and ICT Curriculum development guidelines, published by Career Space and Cedefop in 2001 and 2002.
As a result, two workshop agreements were published, these include CWA 14925: Generic ICT Skills Profiles for the ICT supply industry-a review and CWA 15005 ICT Curriculum Development Guidelines for the ICT supply industry - a review of the Career Space work.
During the period February - November 2005, the Workshop worked towards an ICT Skills (Meta/ Reference) Framework. As a result, the CWA 15515: European ICT Skills Meta-Framework - State-of-the-Art review, clarification of the realities, and recommendations for next steps was published.
During the period March 2007 - September 2008, the Workshop worked on 'A European e-Competence Framework'. The resulting document CWA 15893 was published by CEN in November 2008.

In 2009 two more agreements were approved on developing a practical tool to access eCareer services and ICT Certification in Europe.
