The European Commission recently published a progress report on the development of education and training systems in Europe over the last decade. The report shows how countries in the EU have improved in key areas, but achieved only one out of the five benchmarks set for 2010. The results also reveal the initial progress of Member States in achieving the 2020 benchmarks in education & training.
Over the last ten years, the target for increasing the number of Maths, Science and Technology graduates by 15% has been achieved with an even greater 37% increase. The report shows however that the gender gap remains significant in this area, where male graduates still outnumber women. Overall participation in education particularly among adults, and children in pre-primary education has also risen.
