CEPIS Adopts a Position on the Electronic Identification and Trust Services

LSIThe CEPIS Legal and Security Issues Special Interest Network (LSI SIN) has issued a Position on the Electronic Identification and Trust Services (eIDAS) that has been approved by the 54(15) Council Meeting and adopted as the official CEPIS position.

The position addresses the Regulation on electronic identification and trust services for electronic transactions in the internal market (eIDAS Regulation) which aims to provide a predictable regulatory environment to enable secure electronic interactions between businesses, citizens and public authorities. The CEPIS position highlights concerns regarding the acquisition of information that allows for the monitoring and profiling of citizens and the possibility to ignore the data minimisation principle. It therefore recommends the use of eID that prevents the tracking of users. It also suggests that the notions of security and privacy be emphasised and that clarifications be made in the upcoming implementing acts.
